Xbox Pulls Cloud Gaming From 2020 Samsung TVs

Microsoft will drop Xbox Cloud Gaming from 2020 Samsung TVs on November 3, the same month Game Pass caps Ultimate at 15 cloud hours.

Microsoft will pull the Xbox app from 2020 Samsung Smart TVs on November 3, 2026. Emails went out on September 30 to accounts that had used the app on those sets.

Samsung models from 2021 onward keep streaming, as do PCs, phones, tablets, and Xbox consoles. The cutoff lands in the same month Game Pass replaces unlimited cloud play with a 15-hour cap on Ultimate.

2020 Samsung TVs Lose the Xbox App on November 3

The message is blunt. Microsoft says updates to the tech behind Xbox Cloud Gaming no longer work with the operating system on 2020 Samsung models, so the Xbox app will stop on those sets.

Starting 3 November, the XBOX app will no longer be supported on 2020 Samsung Smart TVs as updates to the technology that powers XBOX Cloud Gaming are no longer compatible with the operating system version available on these models. You can continue streaming on newer Samsung Smart TVs (2021 and later), as well as across a wide range of supported devices, including PCs, smartphones, tablets and XBOX consoles.

Microsoft, email to 2020 Samsung Smart TV Xbox app users

Those 2020 sets are six years old, which is young for a television people bought as a living-room fixture. Microsoft is not pulling Xbox Cloud Gaming off Samsung as a brand. It is drawing a line at one model year, then pointing everyone else to the list of screens that can still stream Xbox games on devices you already have.

LG sets, Amazon Fire TV, and TVs running VIDAA OS remain on that list. The hole is the specific Samsung generation that just got the notice.

Fifteen Hours Is the New Ceiling for Ultimate

On September 3, Team Xbox said that beginning in November, Game Pass will include a fixed block of monthly cloud hours for each Game Pass plan instead of open streaming. Ultimate gets 15 hours, Premium 10, and Essential 5. Extra time will be sold in the Xbox Store once the included hours run out. Pricing for those packs is still unpublished.

CLOUD HOURS BY GAME PASS PLAN

Plan Cloud hours per month US monthly price
Game Pass Ultimate 15 hours $22.99
Game Pass Premium 10 hours $14.99
Game Pass Essential 5 hours $9.99

Fifteen hours is 30 minutes a day across a 30-day month. Premium works out to 20 minutes a day, Essential to 10. Local play on a console or PC does not use this clock. The cap hits people who stream on a TV, a phone, a browser, or an older Xbox.

Xbox expects the change to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers, the slice that already streams more than the new ceilings. On April 21, Ultimate fell from $29.99 to $22.99 a month, a $7 cut, and that post still listed unlimited Xbox Cloud Gaming as part of the plan. Five months later the unlimited line is gone.

Xbox’s own reason for the meter is cost. “The cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer,” Team Xbox wrote. “Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost.”

Why Microsoft Says the App Cannot Stay

Microsoft’s public line on the TVs is compatibility, not money. The email blames the OS version on 2020 Samsung models. That is a thin explanation if you think of cloud gaming as a video feed in a web app, which is how critics first read it.

The stronger engineering account came from the developer behind Better xCloud, posting as redphx. He argued Microsoft will retire the old xbox.com/play client and move the stack to play.xbox.com, which uses new APIs that older TV browsers lack, because those Samsung sets run outdated Chromium builds. He called that a valid reason.

WHERE THE EXPLANATIONS SPLIT

  • Microsoft’s email: Cloud Gaming updates no longer work with the OS version on 2020 Samsung Smart TVs, so the Xbox app stops on November 3.
  • The client stack: Better xCloud’s developer says the new play.xbox.com APIs will not run on the old Chromium in those TVs, which matches a real browser cutoff.
  • The bill for GPU time: Xbox already said cloud costs rise as more people stream for longer, which is why Ultimate, Premium, and Essential all get monthly hour caps in November.

Those three accounts can all be true at once. A stack that old TVs cannot run is a clean way to drop sessions that sit on a big living-room screen for hours, which are the sessions that burn the most cloud GPU time. Microsoft did not say it is cutting 2020 Samsung sets to save bandwidth. It also did not explain, in the email, which OS build failed or why a video stream needed that build.

The Campaign That Called a TV an Xbox

Samsung was not a side door Microsoft forgot about. It was the first TV partner in the “play on the screen you already own” pitch, and the 2020 sets now being cut were sold that story in software, then in ads.

FROM ANY SCREEN TO SOME SCREENS

  1. June 30, 2022: Xbox launches the Xbox app on Samsung 2022 Smart TVs in 27 countries, with Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, and Microsoft Flight Simulator playable from the Samsung Gaming Hub without a console.
  2. September 2023: Samsung extends a limited Gaming Hub to 2020 smart TVs, adding Xbox Cloud Gaming alongside other streaming apps on that older Tizen generation.
  3. November 14, 2024: Xbox launches the This Is an Xbox campaign and names Samsung Smart TVs, Fire TV, phones, PCs, and headsets as Xbox screens, after the Samsung Gaming Hub partnership with Xbox had already made the TV a storefront for Game Pass.
  4. February 20, 2026: Asha Sharma, previously in Microsoft’s CoreAI product group, becomes Xbox CEO as Phil Spencer, who had led Xbox since 2014, retires.
  5. March 2026: A Microsoft spokesperson says Sharma retired This Is an Xbox “because it didn’t feel like Xbox” and is “personally leading a reset of how we show up as a brand.”
  6. April 21, 2026: Game Pass Ultimate falls to $22.99 a month and still includes unlimited Xbox Cloud Gaming in Xbox’s own description of the plan.
  7. September 3, 2026: Unlimited cloud play is scheduled to end in November, replaced by 15, 10, and 5 hour monthly blocks.
  8. September 30, 2026: Microsoft emails 2020 Samsung Smart TV users that the Xbox app dies on November 3.

The people who took the 2022 and 2023 TV pitch at face value now hold the first screens that no longer count. Sharma’s reset killed the slogan in March. November is when the hardware that slogan sold starts to go dark.

Who Loses a Living-Room Xbox

The group on the hook is the household that treated a 2020 Samsung set as the Xbox: a Game Pass Ultimate sub, a Bluetooth pad, no console in the cabinet. On November 3 that TV will not open the app. In November the same sub, on any remaining screen, gets 15 cloud hours unless the account sits in a market that has been told otherwise.

Xbox still sells cloud as a way for Xbox One owners to play eligible Series X|S games without buying a new box, and that path survives on consoles, PCs, phones, and newer TVs. It does not survive on the 2020 Samsung living-room set that just got the email. A Fire TV stick, a 2021 Samsung, or a laptop browser still works. The gap is the people who were told they did not need another box.

WHAT STILL STREAMS AFTER NOVEMBER 3

  • Newer Samsung TVs: 2021 and later models keep the Xbox app, per the same email that cuts 2020.
  • Other TV platforms: Select LG sets, Amazon Fire TV, and VIDAA OS TVs remain on Xbox’s cloud device list.
  • Phones, tablets, and PCs: Browser and app streaming continue, which is how most of the 4% heavy users can keep playing after the TV goes dark.
  • Xbox consoles: Series X|S and Xbox One can still pull games from the cloud, including as a try-before-download path.

Existing Game Pass members on auto-renew in some markets have been told the hour caps will not change their current plan. Microsoft emails quoted by subscribers in Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, and Poland say the November limits “will only affect new purchases” and will not touch an auto-recurring sub in that market. São Paulo’s consumer body, Procon-SP, has said older contracts cannot be rewritten in Brazil unless the customer agrees. The United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom have not been described as getting that pass. The TV cutoff is separate. A grandfathered Ultimate account in Brazil still loses the 2020 Samsung app on November 3.

TCL Gets the App as 2020 Sets Get Cut

Microsoft is not leaving the TV rack. In early September it said the Xbox app would arrive on supported TCL smart TVs in the coming months, on the same calendar as pay-as-you-go cloud hours. Hisense sets on VIDAA OS already picked up the app earlier in 2026. LG and Fire TV were already there.

That is a year-line, not a category exit. 2020 Samsung is out. 2021 Samsung stays. TCL is being added. The living-room Xbox is being narrowed to sets whose OS can take the new client, which in practice means newer silicon and a newer browser. People who bought a 2020 Samsung after Gaming Hub arrived in 2023 got about three years of Xbox on that panel.

Non-subscribers will also be able, beginning in November, to buy cloud hours in the Xbox Store and stream eligible games they own, without Game Pass. That product sits next to the cap, not against it. Xbox is metering the GPU and still putting the app on more TV brands. The 2020 Samsung owners are the ones who fall off the device list while that expansion runs.

Extra Cloud Hours Still Have No Price

Xbox said it will share prices, pack sizes, eligible games, market rules, and a way to check remaining time in November. Until those numbers land, a heavy streamer on Ultimate knows the ceiling (15 hours) and not the overage.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The TV date: The Xbox app stops on 2020 Samsung Smart TVs on November 3, 2026.
  • The hour caps: Beginning in November, Ultimate includes 15 cloud hours, Premium 10, and Essential 5, with extra time sold in the Xbox Store.
  • Who Xbox says is hit: About 4% of Game Pass subscribers already stream past those ceilings.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Overage prices: Xbox has not published what extra cloud hours will cost, or how partial sessions are rounded.
  • The exemption map: Microsoft has not posted a full country list of grandfathered auto-renew plans.
  • The next TV cut: No later Samsung year, LG line, or Fire TV generation has been named in the September 30 emails.

On November 3 the 2020 Samsung sets go dark for Xbox. Newer TVs stay on. The extra hours still have no price.
